Midway Clay offers a variety of one-time and multi-week classes for potters at all levels, whether you’re brand-new or looking to advance your skills. Our classes provide a supportive environment where you can learn, experiment, and have fun creating with clay.

One-Time Classes
Sip & Spin
Relax, unwind, and have fun playing with clay in this two-hour, one-time wheel throwing class. No clay experience is required! Our instructors will make sure everyone is successful. We’ll provide beer, wine and N/A beverages.
You can expect to create 2 pieces during the class. Our staff will glaze and fire your pieces, which will be ready for pickup in 2-3 weeks.
You must be 21 or older to take this class.
Taste of Wheel Throwing
6-Week Session
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to throw pottery, this class is for you! Our six-week course is a low-barrier introduction to wheel throwing designed for absolute beginners. Come explore the excitement and fun of creating with clay in a supportive, judgement-free environment. You’ll create cylinders, tumblers, and bowls, learn to trim your work, and complete your pieces with a basic dip glaze. If you decide you want to continue your pottery journey (and we think you will!) you can continue to our 8-week wheel class. This class meets for two hours per week for six weeks.
This course includes 6 hours of drop-in open studio time during our scheduled open studio hours, which you can use to get some extra practice time or make up a class you missed.

Wheel Throwing Fundamentals
8-Week Session
This is a more comprehensive wheel class open to all levels, whether you’re starting out or have previous clay experience. Our instructors will teach fundamental wheel throwing skills, as well as trimming and glazing. This class also touches on more advanced techniques like pulling handles and making lids. This class meets for two hours per week for eight weeks.
This course includes 8 hours of drop-in open studio time during our scheduled open studio hours, which you can use to get some extra practice or make up a class you missed.

Beginning Sculpture
6-Week Session
Learn basic coil-building and sculpting methods to bring figments of your imagination to life. Whether you’re looking to create small-scale sculptures, add decoration to your functional work, or learn a new skill, this 6-week class is conducive to expression and experimentation. The class is built for beginners with little-to-no experience hand-building with clay. Be ready to start building on the first day of class! This class meets for two hours per week for six weeks.

No! We offer classes designed for people with absolutely no clay experience. If you just want to get your feet wet, sign up for a one-day Sip & Spin or our 6-week Taste of Wheel course. If you’re ready to dive in, our 8-week Wheel Throwing class is a great place to start. Our instructors will guide you through the fundamental skills and techniques you need as you begin your clay journey.

Unless otherwise indicated in the class description, the class fee includes 25 pounds of clay per participant and all the tools, equipment, and materials you need to complete your pieces. If you would like to purchase additional pieces to bring home, you can do so through KilnFire or by talking to your instructor.

All the supplies, equipment, and tools you need for class will be provided by Midway. Working with clay is messy, so we recommend that you wear clothing and shoes that can get dirty. Leave jewelry and valuables at home.

Many of our classes include a certain number of open studio hours during the class session. Think of open studio time like office hours, but for pottery! You can use these open studio hours for practice time or to make up classes you missed. Open studio is also a good time to stop by and pick up your finished work after your class ends.
You must make a reservation through KilnFire for open studio time. There are typically open studio hours scheduled each day of the week, Monday through Sunday. You can also use KilnFire to check how much open studio time you have remaining.
Be sure to make a reservation if you plan to come in for open studio, as the hours may be canceled if nobody is signed up.

Yes! Each of our classes comes with a certain number of pieces for you to bring home. If you’re interested in keeping more, you can purchase additional pieces through KilnFire or speak to your instructor.

We are not able to offer refunds or make-up days for missed classes. Instead, we encourage you to use your open studio time to make up any class time you miss during the course.

All cancellation requests must be made 1 week prior to the class via email for a 50% refund. There are no refunds for missed classes during the session, or cancellations under 1 week.
You can reschedule one-day classes no later than 72 hours in advance, subject to a $20 rescheduling fee. All rescheduling requests must be made at least 72 hours prior to class time via email. Requests under 72 hours cannot be accommodated.
